What people around the world are saying about the PlayStation 5

So what does it look like?

Futuristic. Yeah that’s the word, the console looks futuristic because of its alienistic look and tower-like design. It is a lot different than the previous generations in the PlayStation console family. The console’s design will make it stand out even and grab everyone’s attention.

The console’s body is made up of two white plates/panels with matte finish and a black colored bulky main case that houses all of the hardware.

The color of the console and the accessories is not as bright as you might expect. Lucy James from GameSpot also points it out in GameSpot’s PS5 unboxing video.

As compared to the online digital representational images, the console isn’t blinding bright white, which is a good thing. It has a mixed tone of grey and white which is still white, but less painful to look at.

The body of the console has little ‘X’s squares ‘O’s and triangles engraved as part of the design texture, resembling the 4 iconic action buttons on the controller. Talking about controllers, yeah the controller has that engraved texture pattern too.

The top-side is fairly plain, most of the pattern is at the back. You should note, the pattern is not all branding, it also provides grip.

A unbox video by Lew Later on Unbox Therapy shows side by side comparison of both the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 Pro.

You can clearly see that the PS5 is thicker & taller. The PlayStation 5 is also a little heavier and has an overall bulkier body. It will take up a lot of space on your desk.

The console ships with a base/stand because it can’t be placed horizontally due to its complex non uniform structure. The base(stand) is really well designed and does its job well, but it still isn’t the most effective solution if you want to place the console horizontally. Even after using the base, the ground clearance looks pretty low, so there’s a chance that side of the console might get scratched when the console is placed horizontally. Also it feels a little shaky, meaning you will have to be cautions at all times.

The back of the console has 2 USB type A ports, a  LAN port, a HDMI port and a power connector. Also, a lot of air vents. The vents on the back help with heat dissipation and keep the console cool.

There’s also an additional USB A port and a USB type C port on the front and subtly placed power button and eject button(only for non digital version).

As mentioned on the packaging box, the console comes with ASTRO’s PLAYROOM game preinstalled, which probably is for giving you a basic experience of the UI, the load time, and other capabilities.

The controller is bigger and you can tell that a lot of thought has gone into its design. As compared to the PlayStation DualShock controller, the touchpad is larger and the options and create buttons are too. The sound the buttons make after pressing makes the controller feel more responsive. The controller features a USB C charging port which is always better than the micro usb. There’s also a dedicated mute button for the mic on the controller. The buttons on the controller aren’t color coded, but that is just to match the overall black and white combination and won’t be a problem. A controller breakdown video by YouTuber Austin Evans revealed that the controller comes with two microphones.

Let’s have a look at what you get aside from the actual console?

Accessories:

  • AC power cord: To power up the console
  • A base: A disc shaped unit with a single flathead screw. Used to hold the console vertically or horizontally.
  • HDMI cable: Used to connect the PS5 to a visual display like a monitor or a television.
  • USB to USB C Dual sense controller cable: To charge the controllers or connect the controller through a wired connection.

Additional accessories(Optional):

  • Charging Station: A charging dock to hold and charge your PS5 controllers.
  • HD Camera: A camera to stream or record yourself while playing the games. Supports up to 1080p resolution. It comes with a USB type 3 connector which plugs into the PS5.
  • Media Remote: A remote to conveniently control movies, videos and streaming services on the PlayStation.
  • Pulse 3D Wireless Headset: The Pulse 3D wireless Headset features dual mic with noise cancellation and a strong battery life of up to 12hrs. Sony has clarified that the Pulse 3D headset isn’t required to experience the 3D audio on the PlayStation 5.

The PS5 is a lot different from Sony’s previous consoles, not only because of the specifications and capabilities but also its design.
