Valve cancels ESL One Rio 2020 CSGO Major due to the pandemic

Yes, that’s right. Due to the ongoing disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, ESL and Valve have together decided to cancel the ESL One Rio 2020 CSGO Major.

This announcement was made by ESL via Twitter

In an article, ESL said, “Together with Valve we had to make the tough but safe decision to cancel the ESL One Rio Major 2020 due to the ongoing disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.”

ESL further added, “New dates will be announced once a return for an in-arena Major is safe for everyone involved. “

Valve also shared the same via the Counter Strike blog post, which also stated Valve’s stand on the recent talking point in the scene, which is some coaches exploiting a CSGO spectator Bug.

Valve stated in the blogpost that the Major will be put on hold until it’s safe to at least conduct the Regional Major Rankings (RMR) LAN events around the globe. Until the situations are favourable for a LAN, the RMR events will be held online.

Valve states, it’s a painful decision and they don’t want to risk the lives of players and fans while the pandemic still poses a threat to everyone.

Note: All purchased tickets (for ESL Rio 2020 CSGO Major) remain fully valid or can be refunded upon request.

This is a sad news for the entire CSGO Community, especially the vocal Brazilian fan base that has always shown love and passion towards Counter Strike.

In this darkness, there’s a little ray of hope. ESL has announced 3 big events including a LAN tournament for the rest of 2020.
