The Indian Government on Esports and Gaming Policies

The questions that arose:

Recently, the topic of Gaming and Esports was raised in a parliamentary session. Shri Jagdambika Pal presented several questions to Shri Kiren Rijiju, the Minister of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The questions mainly focused on whether the government is planning to introduce Esports and gaming-related policies or any government plans to make them a part of the Concurrent List. The ministry was enquired about the estimations of the value and size of the gaming industry in India. Other questions included whether the government has any strategy to prevent the spread of illegal gaming or gambling. One of the most important questions was if the government has any plans of implementing educational gaming.

The questions presented at the parliament session were:

  • If there are any governmental plans regarding the introduction of gaming and esports in India?
  • Has the government planned anything concerning the addition of gaming and sports to the Concurrent List?
  • Does the government have any information about the value or size of the growing gaming industry in India?
  • If the government has any strategy to prevent the growth of illegal gaming and gambling in India?
  • Is the government planning to implement educational gaming in the future?

Responses of the Indian government:

According to Shri Kiren Rijiju, the Indian government recognizes the importance of Esports as an emerging platform. It also acknowledges the presence of several Esports enthusiasts throughout the nation. The government of India also accepts the differences between gambling and Esports and does not, in any way, intend to legalize gambling. The ministry also stated that sports remain under the State List, and no studies have been conducted yet on the present Esports market. Despite being aware of many federations, the ministry does not recognize any association or partnership.

The possibility of a bright future:

The online gaming industry is expanding today, especially with the advent of Esports. Last year, due to the pandemic, the popularity of online games increased by leaps and bounds. The acknowledgment of the significance of Esports by the Indian government is a great leap for the online gaming industry. Apart from creating better online gaming opportunities, it also encourages young digital athletes to continue their online gaming endeavors.
