Sony MIGHT consider acquiring other game studios

Even if you don’t own a PlayStation 5 or don’t plan to buy one, you should be happy to hear that Sony will consider acquiring other game studios to strengthen its library of games for PlayStation 4 & 5.

While speaking with Reuters the President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Jim Ryan said that the company has plans to grow its studio capability organically, but he added ”where we can bolster our in-house capability with selective M&A[mergers and acquisitions] that might be possible”.

This shows Sony’s PlayStation division is considering buying more game development studios in order to strengthen the PlayStation’s portfolio of games and secure PlayStation 5’s future.

Right now it looks like Xbox is way ahead of PlayStation as in just the past few years it has acquired many big studios like Obsidian the makers of Fallout: New Vegas and The Outer Worlds, InXile the makers of Wasteland franchise, Undead labs, the makers of State of Decay franchise and many more. And, on top of all of that, the most recent acquisition of ZeniMax Media the parent company of Bethesda Softworks and idSoftware for $7.5bn. After the ZeniMax Media acquisition, Microsoft jumped from owning 15 to owning 23 creative studios.

While on the other side, Sony’s most recent notable acquisition was in 2019 when it acquired Spider-Man and Ratchet & Clank developer Insomniac. PlayStation still has some good games to attract and retain consumers, but sooner or later PlayStation will need to either acquire more studios to keep up with its competitor Xbox.

Even though Microsoft’s acquisitions will bring multiple AAA titles for Xbox, the PlayStation lineup is just as strong, also two of its games come from now Microsoft owned Bethesda Studios.

PlayStation 5 is launching on November 12 for the US, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea, and on 19 November for the rest of the world.

With exclusive games like Horizon Forbidden West, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, Spider-Man: Miles Morales and other big AA titles like Deathloop, Godfall, Ghostwire: Tokyo, Deathloop and more, the PlayStation lineup also looks stacked. But it is clear that Sony needs to acquire more studios if it wants to stay relevant years down the road.

The news that Sony will consider acquiring more studios surely must’ve made the PlayStation consumers and fans happy.
