ROG Phone 5 vs ROG Phone 3: Side by side comparison

The ROG Phone 5 launched a few months ago and was quite well received by the ROG fans. We decided to do a side by side comparison of the newer ROG Phone 5 with its predecessor, the ROG Phone 3. Here’s the comparison. This comparison will give you a better idea about both the gaming smartphones and will help you make a decision in case you plan to buy one of these two gaming smartphones.

We received the ROG Phone 3 and the ROG Phone 5 device for a review and we decided to also compare them. A lot of features in the ROG Phone 3 & ROG Phone 5 are similar and so we are focusing only on major changes.

Clock speed difference

The ROG Phone 3 has a better clock speed of 3.1 GHz as compared to the ROG Phone 5’s 2.84 GHz. This improves the video rendering and loading times on the device. Also, the ROG Phone 3 also boots up a little quicker than the newer ROG Phone 5.

Back design

Comparing back side of the phones

The ROG logo on the back is also a lot different. The ROG Phone 3 has an aggressive fancy look while the ROG Phone 5’s back design is much more simple.

Back display panel

Unlike the ROG Phone 3, the ROG Phone 5’s Pro & Ultimate variants have a small display panel on the back that can be used to display various alerts.

The small display is called the ROG Vision. You can customize it using the Armoury Crate App and there’s a lot of customization options available.

Dual-cell design and charging wattage

Even in terms of battery & power the ROG Phone 5 gets ahead. While both the phones have 6000mAh battery, the ROG Phone 5 uses a newer technology allowing for a better battery life. Unlike the ROG Phone 3, the ROG Phone 5 supports up to 65W charging thanks to its dual-cell design with 2 x 3000mAh batteries. This dual-cell design allows the use of a 65W charger while also keeping the temperature low and not sacrificing battery life. The difference in charging with a 65W charger and 30W charger is quite substantial and hence the ROG Phone 5 gets ahead by quite a bit.

Audio jack

Now to one of the most important points, the audio jack. Back when ROG Phone 3 launched in 2020, many were upset that the phone didn’t come with a dedicated 3.5mm audio jack. This meant that the users were forced to either use the USB Type C port or use wireless earphones, which introduces some latency.

Audio Jack missing in ROG Phone 3 but added in ROG Phone 5

With ROG Phone 5, Asus made sure to add a dedicated 3.5mm audio jack while still managing to maintain the dual USB Type C port design. This change was of course well received and the end users were happy with the 3.5mm audio jack being back.

To our surprise the differences are quite less. There are a lot of other parameters that can be considered, but we only focused on some key points that we think are important enough. We hope this helps you make a decision in case you are looking to buy one of these devices.

With the basic configurations being similar, the ROG Phone 5 is just a slightly better, more consumer focused and likeable gaming smartphone in the premium gaming phone series by Asus ROG.

We hope that with this side by side comparison, we are able to help you, in case you are interested in buying one of them.
