While speaking to IGN at SXSW, Roberts talked about the movie’s plot and how it is inspired by the Resident Evil games.

Director & writer Johannes Roberts said, “It’s[the movie] an ensemble piece, and Raccoon City plays a big part and is a character in the movie,” He said, “It’s about this group of people all coming from different angles – some coming into town, some already having grown up in this town – meeting over this one fateful night.”(Source: IGN)

Roberts also talked about how the movie’s tone is inspired by the Resident Evil 2 Remake.

I love the second game, the remake of the second game was probably the entry point into the movie for me” he said. “It just blew me away completely. It was like from that moment on i think we all knew where we were going with this movie because it was such a wonderful cinematic experience with the tone the constant dark rain sort of aspect of the game

Roberts has put more focus on keeping the atmosphere and surrounding very dark and creepy. Just like in the games. “We very much took the tone of the remake of the second game and made that our template for this movie”, Roberts said.
