Resident Evil 4 VR will release later this year
The recently announced Resident Evil 4 VR is scheduled to launch sometime “later this year”. The game’s announcement first came in during the RE Showcase live stream and today during the Oculus Gaming Showcase live stream the release window was revealed.
“We are bringing Resident Evil 4 to Quest 2 later this year”, said Ruth Bram, Executive Producer, Oculus Studios, Facebook Reality Labs during the showcase.
Resident Evil 4 is a 16 year old game that launched back in 2005 on GameCube. Oculus Studios is now working closely with Armature and Capcom to rework the entire game for VR.
During the broadcast, Ruth Bram explained how the game is being redesigned for VR. “The most obvious differences between playing already 4 in VR and console is a perspective and interactivity.” says Bram. “Every corner of the world is being enhanced and remastered to feel fresh and exciting to OGs and to new fans alike, by ratcheting up the suspense as only VR can.“
Over 4500 textures have either been repainted or upscaled to a higher resolution, said Bram. It looks like the entire game is being reworked for VR. The developers have been reengineered to behave like physical objects that the players can pick up and interact with. For instance, weapons, ammo, treasures, keys, etc.
The rework will allow the VR version to run at higher FPS unlike the older 30 FPS version. Playing it in VR also means that the game will feel much more scarier.
“We have been working on this title for a couple years now and just carefully and reverently making changes that will make your experience feel both fresh and nostalgic”, says Bram.
