PlayStation 5 does not support 120 FPS on backwards compatible games

Both the PlayStation and Xbox next-gen consoles are out now, and people around the world are enjoying playing the next-gen games. But what about the older titles? You can play games for PS4 and Xbox One on the next-gen consoles through the backwards compatibility feature.

Games like Warzone, Rainbow Six Siege, Star Wars; Squadrons and Rocket League are not built for next-gen consoles but can be played through backwards compatibility on both the PlayStation 5 & Xbox Series X.

Warzone, a title built for PS4, can be played on PS5 through backwards compatibility, but it doesn’t boot with 120 FPS. Also, there’s no in-game option available to manually enable 120 FPS, meaning the game simply doesn’t support 120 FPS on the PlayStation 5. The problem here is that the Xbox Series X allows you to run Warzone at 120 FPS through backwards compatibility, but the same isn’t possible on the PS5 console.

Star Wars: Squadron also supports 120 FPS on Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S as well, but not on PS5. Rocket League, the popular car driving soccer game now also supports 120 FPS on Xbox Series X, but not on PS5. “Why is this?”, you ask.

Psyonix, the developer of Rocket league solves the mystery for us. Enabling 120 FPS requires a full native port for PS5, while on the Xbox Series X it can be done in a small patch update, Psyonix told Eurogamer.

“Our team’s main focus this year was our recent free to play transition and updating major features like our Tournaments system”, said Psyonix. “Due to this we had to make tough decisions on what else we could achieve. Enabling 120hz on Xbox Series X|S is a minor patch, but enabling it on PS5 requires a full native port due to how backwards compatibility is implemented on the console, and unfortunately wasn’t possible due to our focus elsewhere.” (Source: Eurogamer)

This explains exactly why 120 FPS is supported on Xbox Series X but not on PS5 for games like Star Wars: Squadrons, Rocket League, Warzone, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, etc. This also means it is likely that we will see more games on the Xbox consoles that support 120 FPS, as compared to the PlayStation 5.

Thinking about the future, this won’t be a big problem as upcoming games will be made for the next-gen consoles. But, as of now, Xbox Series X is clearly edging out the PS5 in terms of frame rates.

But now another question rises, will we be able to play PS4 titles on PS5 with 120 FPS in the future?

That totally depends on Sony. It is pretty much upto Sony to allow game developers to enable 120 FPS for older games on PS5. If Sony puts enough resources to work on this problem, maybe in the near future it would be possible for developers to enable support for higher frame rates without the need of a full native port. But, Sony doesn’t have any plans for this as of now.

Besides faster load times and better visuals, one of the biggest selling points of the next-gen consoles has been their ability to run games at 120 FPS on displays(VDUs) that support 120hz. So will Sony take efforts to make more 120 FPS available for more older titles? Let’s wait and watch.
