PGL shares an update on the upcoming CSGO Major 2021 venue
PGL has shared an update on the venue for the upcoming CSGO Major. To update the Counter-Strike fans and to clear the air about the rumors about change of venue of the upcoming CSGO Major.

“Right now, we are in direct discussions with the Swedish authorities and working together to find a solution to still host the PGL MAJOR in Stockholm.” the update says.
The last CSGO Major was hosted by Starladder and took place two years ago in Berlin, Germany in August 2019. The next CSGO Major i.e. ESL One: Rio 2020 which was supposed to take place in November 2020 was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Now after two years, which feels like a decade to Counter-Strike fans, the CSGO Major will take place this year from October 23 to November 7. As announced earlier in January 2021, the event was supposed to take place at the Avicii Arena in Stocholm, Sweden. But the current COVID-19 regulation in the Sweden only allow a maximum of 300 spectators for a live event. And hence PGL is considering moving the Major to a different country.
Hosting the Major in Sweden is still a possibility as PGL stated in the update that the current restrictions “MIGHT be lifted after September 15, depending on the development of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
In the update PGL also mentioned about a “backup plan” and the possibility of moving the venue to a different country in Europe in case they aren’t able to execute the event properly due to the COVID-19 restrictions. Rumors are that Romania is a potential option.
PGL talked about how they have a very short window of opportunity to move the Major to a venue that will allow a larger vaccinated audience, even with an uncertain COVID situation.
At the end, PGL said, “Nevertheless, we still hope that Sweden, the home of Counter-Strike, will be the host for the next CS:GO MAJOR. If the conditions outlined are not met, we will go forward with the backup plan and move the event into a different country.”
This suggests that PGL still hopes for the Major to take place in Stockholm, Sweden. The reason being the history & heritage of Counter-Strike esports with Sweden. It is said to be the home of Counter-Strike for a reason.
It looks like the post was to reassure the community that the Major is still happening, and that PGL is ready with their “backup Plan”, in case the event isn’t hosted in Sweden.
