“Come with great knowledge in gaming and esports and not for the sake of it” – Shiva Nandy
In an interview with The Gaming Reporter, Shiva Nandy, Founder & CEO, Skyesports shared his views on the rise of Valorant, Skyesports’ growth in 2020 and hosting tournaments for variety of games.
The Gaming Reporter – What’s the ideology behind associating teams with specific regions in the Valorant Skyesports League tournaments?
Shiva Nandy – Always fancied having #IPL like league for gaming and esports, dreams do come true and how the audience reacted to the format and the craze. We wanted to bring something similar for esports and it worked out well. Audience are loving the format and there are ever growing fans to support the cities than just players.
TGR – Skyesports has expanded a lot since last year in terms of viewership & brand name. What according to you was a turning point for the company?
SN – Our continuous effort to give great tournaments to the gaming community has helped us grow big and in a fast pace. We are grinding as hard as the players too. Our team brainstorms frequently on bringing more IPs and how we can engage with more gamers and convert casual gamers to esports gamers. Tournaments like Skyesports Grandslam and Skyesports Championship has concreted in gamers mind and that has given us good credibility from gamers.
TGR – We all know that the rise of Valorant esports has benefited Indian esports a lot, especially PC esports. What do you think made it possible? What does Valorant bring to the table that other PC titles don’t?
SN – Valorant came in as a big surprise to a lot of Indian gamers. After a very long time, PC gamers have something good in terms of competitive gaming and great graphics and which works well even in a budget PC. This was a big game changer. The game is very interesting for audience to watch and looks cinematic with the abilities in a FPS game.
TGR – Skyesports has hosted tournaments for games like Clash of Clans, Brawl Stars and WCC Rivals, which is definitely unique as we don’t see other tournament organizers host tournaments for these games as they aren’t as big titles in terms of player & viewer base. How different hosting a tournament for a popular title is as compared to a not so popular one?
SN – We organize tournaments for games which the gaming community love and which is popular. Games like Clash of Clans, Brawlstars and WCC have separate fan base and those gamers grind those games as hard as popular titles. We have dedicated league ops team which cater to different games and hosting them is a great experience even for our team.
TGR – What are the organization’s goals for 2021?
SN – We are scaling our existing IP’s and lots of scrims for new gamers. We will definitely target to do more LAN events this year.
TGR – What advice would you give to someone who wants to start an esports startup in India?
SN – Come with great knowledge in gaming and esports and not for the sake of it. The Indian gaming industry needs a lot of energetic and knowledgeable entrepreneurs who can do well and if done well, together we can make this big.
