How mobile gaming is revolutionizing the Indian gaming industry

While PC gaming has been prospering worldwide, it has seen a salient decline in markets like India. With the exponential upsurge of their counterpart platform, the mobile gaming industry, Indian esports organizations are letting go of prominent PC gaming rosters with the organizers now engaging in mobile game events.

The trend of playing competitive games using mobile devices has caught fire in such a colossal way that no supernatural power can extinguish it. Within two year’s time, mobile gaming now dominates 40% of the global gaming market share compared to PC gaming’s 21%. With access to a wide array of multi-genre mobile games that includes action, adventure, sports, puzzles, real-time strategy, to role-playing, the Indian mobile gaming market is projected to reach 628 million users by 2021 positioning India to be the next major gaming market.

A majority of the “gamers” fall into the age group of 16-35 with a heavier percentage shifting towards the 16-22 years bracket, comprising of GenZ’s and Millenials. Teenagers lack many things in life but the lack of purchase power has been encountered to be one of the crucial reasons for the decline of the entire PC and console gaming market in India. According to publicly available data, the average cost of buying or assembling a gaming computer is set at INR 70,000. Popular consoles like the PlayStation 4 and Xbox have also proven to be pocket heavy. The only alternative to meticulously experience console-quality gaming has been proven to be via mobile gaming. A smartphone with flagship specifications can now be bought for less than 25% cost of a gaming PC.

With mobile gaming, the entire aspect of a tormented teenager seeking approval of a higher authority, one’s parents, has been completely expunged. To keep up with the ever-turning wheels of time and technology, parents were forced to place mobile devices in their children’s hands for the sake of safety and networking. These mobile devices enabled every ardent game lover to finally quench their thirst for console-level gaming experiences. What followed was a digital revolution that revamped data charges and internet accessibility ameliorating conditions even further.

Following this revolution in the mobile gaming market, we saw a surge of popular mobile titles like Call of Duty, Clash of Clans, Asphalt series, Dream League Soccer, Mini Militia, and countless more. But one title which is synchronous to sheer domination of statistics and hype is Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds Mobile also known as PUBG Mobile. This multiplayer Battle Royale game now boasts over 55 million-plus downloads and 30 million active players in India.

PUBG mobile has been able to cater to the vast majority of smartphone users, by delivering enriching gaming experience which a PC or console game provides, without altering the competitive nature of the gameplay. PUBG’s fame in the billion-dollar gaming industry enforced various PC and console gaming developers to recognize the potential of mobile gaming and eventually kickstarting mobile versions of the existing games, further compelling them to venture into developing new mobile games.

The ease of access to smartphones not only helped in terms of gaming community expansion but also provided a platform for these gamers to monetize their skills and build a career out of a mere recreational activity. With mobile gaming, the gaming community has also seen a surge in online content and has created new career opportunities for various streamers as well as casters. Additionally, it has given a boost for content creators who curate gaming news, fan-art & video content for the community via their mobile devices itself.

With the advent of the gaming culture boom in India, various organizations want to associate with the gaming industry to benefit from the phenomenon. Indian esports organizations are investing more capital in building teams, and training facilities to encourage gaming as a career choice.

The boom in the mobile gaming market has also attracted brands like Formula One, Nascar, RedBull, Flipkart, Axe who eventually realized the underlying potential of the gaming industry. With the introduction of new innovations and technologies to mobile games, the mobile gaming industry is expected to be a focal point for various businesses in near future. The continuous mobile game releases, relentless developments in mobile technology, and a boost in modernization and accessibility, we can positively say that the best days are yet to come.
