God of War: Ragnarok might be a cross-gen title

God of War: Ragnarok will launch on both the PlayStation 4 & PlayStation 5, according to David Jaffe, the director of the original God of War series.

During his Twitch livestream, when a viewer asked Jaffe about the release of God of War: Ragnarok, he commented saying “I’m sure the next #GodofWar will be #PS4,#PS5. Of course it will”.

Jaffe seems very confident while making the statement, despite him not being connected with the God of War reboot project for years now.

Considering there are not many PlayStation 5 units available and the fact that PlayStation 4 still has a larger consumer base, it makes sense for Sony to release God Of War: Ragnarok on the PlayStation 4 as well. Many of the upcoming games including Horizon Forbidden West will also be releasing on the PS4, so God of War: Ragnarok launching on PS4 is also likely to happen.

Also, a tweet by PlayStation Spain from January 3 further confirms it.

As you can see in the above image, PlayStation Spain shows titles like Gran Turismo 7, Far Cry 6, Hitman III, Horizon Forbidden West, Returnal & even God of War: Ragnarok, and also talks about reviewing some of them on the PS4 and PS5. But, the tweet mentions Returnal as well, which is a PS5 exclusive, so there’s something wrong here. Either it’s a mistake by PlayStation Spain, or the games might see a PS4 release, especially God of War: Ragnarok, just like in the case of Spider-man: Miles Morales. While the tweet doesn’t specifically mention whether the game is coming to PS4 or not, it does give a glimmer of hope to those that still don’t own a PS5 and are using a PS4 instead.

Sony is yet to make any official statement on the new upcoming God of War game.  All we know for now is that the game is coming sometime in 2021(if not delayed due to the challenges presented by the pandemic). Also there’s a speculation that we might actually see a Thor and Kratos face-off this time around.
