Fortnite next-gen upgrade details revealed

Fortnite is coming to next-gen consoles next week. Epic the developer behind Fortnite has announced in a blogpost that Fortnite will be coming to next-gen consoles on Day 1 with lots of visual and performance improvements.

“The Fortnite builds on Xbox Series X|S and PS5 aren’t simply tweaked last-gen builds but new native ones to harness the power of the new consoles!” says the Fortnite devs team in the blogpost, suggesting that the next-gen console version will have a lot of performance tweaks to better suit the strong specification and capabilities of the next-gen consoles.

Fortnite on Xbox Series X:

The game will run at 4K resolution with upto 60 FPS on the Xbox Series X.

Additionally enhanced fluid simulation for smoke and liquid, new storm and cloud effects, dynamic, interactive and responsive world on the Series X console.

Fortnite on Xbox Series S:

On the Xbox Series S, you can run Fortnite at 1080p with 60 FPS. The blogpost states that most of the visual Series X enhancements will work on Series S, but with the hardware limitations on Series S, will the change be big enough? We’ll just have to wait to find out.

No matter if the visual enhancements improve your experience or not, better load times will certainly will. Yes, Fortnite will have improved loading times on both the Xbox Series X and the Series S.

Just to add a cherry on top, both the Series X and Series S will support 60 FPS with Split Screen.

Fortnite on PlayStation 5:

The game will run at 4K resolution with 60FPS on PlayStation 5 and will also have visual improvements for the surroundings as discussed in the case of the Xbox consoles.

Additionally, on the DualSense controller you will be able to experience haptic feedback based on the type of weapon you’re holding. Apart from the general vibration support, the Fortnite devs have integrated haptic trigger feedback for ranged weapons and suppressed SMG.

Fortnite will also support “PS5’s activities” which will allow players to get directly into the lobby with either Solo, Duos or Squads selected based on user preference. Players then can directly select the mode and queue up to play.

The game will have faster load times and will support Split Screen with 60 FPS on PlayStation 5, just like on the Xbox next-gen consoles.

Few things to note:

Progress:

No matter on what platform you play or will be playing on, your progress will carry over, meaning you won’t have to start from scratch on these newer platforms. Crossplay will be available across all platforms.

A free in-game item:

“In the spirit of remembering the past while looking to the future”, Epic is also offering a free item in the ‘Throwback Axe’. The ‘Throwback Axe’ is the classic default Pickaxe from Fortnite Chapter 1.

The ‘Throwback Axe’ will be available to all Fortnite players across all platforms and can be claimed till January 15, 2021.
