DOOM: Eternal next-gen upgrade guide

It was previously revealed by Bethesda that DOOM Eternal will be eligible for a next-gen upgrade for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. Now, Bethesda has released additional information about the next-gen upgrade.

Upgrades will be available for both the physical and digital version of the game. The physical version will require the user to insert the disc in order to download the upgrade. Even after the upgrade, the disc will still be required to play the game.

Let’s take you through the upgrade process,

Upgrade to Xbox Series X|S:

Once a upgrade is available for the Xbox Series X|S, it can be installed automatically using Microsoft’s Smart Delivery system. Both physical as well as digital versions can be upgraded. Physical version will require the disc to upgrade & play the game.

Upgrade to PlayStation 5:

Once DOOM: Eternal upgrade is available, you download it directly from PlayStation Store for free. Both physical and digital versions of the game are eligible for upgrade. You can play on the same save game file for both the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 .

Physical version cannot be upgraded to the digital version. So if you have a physical copy of the game for PlayStation 4 and have bought a digital-only PlayStation 5 console, you will not be able to play the game despite owning a legit copy. You will need to buy a digital copy of the game. Similarly, the physical version of the game for Xbox One won’t work for Xbox Series S as it doesn’t have a disc drive either.

What about DLCs?

All the additional content/DLCs purchased for DOOM Eternal will transfer over with the next-gen upgrade. But, users need to use the same account on which the purchase was made.

The upgrade includes:
  • Digital offers/ Pre-order offers.
  • Content purchased in-game or from the PlayStation Store or from the Xbox Store.
  • Additional game content.

Some important points:

  • PlayStation 4 copy can only be upgraded to PlayStation 5. Cannot be played on Xbox Series X|S.
  • Xbox One copy can only be upgraded to Xbox Series X|S. Cannot be played on PS5.
  • Nintendo Switch version isn’t eligible for next-gen upgrade to PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.
  • No next-gen upgrade will be available for PC.

DOOM Eternal is a first person shooter game developer by id Software and published by Bethesda.

No date has been revealed yet for when the upgrade will be available. Also, Bethesda hasn’t set any time limit for the next-gen upgrade yet, so you probably won’t have to rush to upgrade your copy to the next-gen version.

You can still play the game on the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 through backwards compatibility.
