Death Stranding Director’s Cut: Everything you need to know

During the recent State of Play presentation, Kojima Productions confirmed the release date for Death Stranding Director’s Cut and shared a new trailer too. Death Stranding Director’s Cut is essentially an PS5 exclusive upgrade to the original Death Stranding with visual upgrades, new gameplay features and new story missions.

Many were confused if the Director’s Cut means that they will have to pay a full price for the next-gen upgrade. Jay Boor, Head of Publishing at Kojima Productions cleared some doubts in a QnA video by answering some questions posted on Twitter.

A Twitter user who goes by the name ‘Apnomis‘ asked, if they were calling it the Director’s Cut to sell the upgrade at a full price instead of offering it for free to those than own the original cut on PS4. He also added that if there was a small upgrade fee of £10 to upgrade he would consider it, but will not pay the full price again.

Now this question is what many others would have in the mind as well, because it doesn’t make sense to pay the full price again for a next-gen upgrade even though it offers a lot more.

Jay Boor replied, “that’s essentially how the upgrade path will work”. He further explained that those that purchased any Death Stranding digital version for PS4 via the PlayStation Store, will get the full Death Stranding Director’s Cut Digital Deluxe Edition for additional $10. Those that don’t own the game and are willing to buy the Death Stranding Director’s Cut.

Now that again might confuse those that own a physical disc version of the game. Read this information posted on the Death Stranding Director’s Cut pre-order page on the PlayStation Store.

Additional info for PS4 owners

It basically states that those that own any PS4 version of the game can get the PS5 upgraded Death Stranding Director’s Cut Digital Deluxe Edition for a discounted price. This discount should approximately be 10$, but might vary slightly with local currencies.

Also, those that own a physical disc version are required to insert the disc every time they wish to download or play the PS5 digital version. Now, it’s great that you don’t need to pay the full price to play the Director’s Cut, but that’s not true for all players. Those that own a PS4 physical disc version of the game and own a PS5 Digital Edition (disc-free console edition) will need to pay the full price to buy the whole game as physical disc version requires you to insert the disc every time you download or play the game, which of course wouldn’t be possible if you own a PS5 Digital Edition. But, that’s the catch with every PS4 game.

Another user also asked if the game will feature 60FPS. Jay Boor replied to his question explaining that the Director’s Cut will feature 2 modes, a performance mode and a fidelity mode. The performance mode will offer upscaled 4K resolution running at 60FPS. On the other hand, the fidelity mode will offer native 4K. He also confirmed that both the modes will support ultrawide-screen display and HDR support.

Death Stranding Director’s Cut will release on the PlayStation 5 on September 24 this year.
