Cyberpunk 2077 delays the next Path of Exile expansion

Is the delay for CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 affecting other game developers? Yes, it is. Though not directly, Cyberpunk 2077’s delay is forcing the Path of Exile developer to delay its 3.13 end-game expansion for the game to January.

If you didn’t know already the release date for Cyberpunk 2077 has been pushed back by 21 days, meaning the game will now launch on December 10.

Last week developer Grinding Gear Games shared a development update for Path of Exile 3.13 end-game expansion, in which the developer said, “if it succeeds, we’ll be able to deliver 3.13 on-time, with a strong stable launch” while talking about restructuring development process for subsequent expansions.

And, now we see a completely different picture. Cyberpunk 2077’s delay has forced Grinding Gear Games to move the launch date of its newest expansion for Path of Exile.

“We do not want to put our players in a position of having to choose between these two games, so we have decided to step out of the way and delay the release of Path of Exile 3.13 until January.”, said CEO Chris Wilson in a blogpost announcing the delay.

He also said, “if we kept our original release date, we would be f**ked.” in a reddit post on the Path of Exile reddit thread.

A question arises to the mind, what if Cyberpunk 2077 is delayed again? Will it delay the Path of Exile expansion again?

Cyberpunk 2077 could very well get delayed, maybe even to January next year. But, in case that happens Grinding Gear Games will probably roll out the Path of Exile expansion at the old date in December, as they were already on point with their planned release schedule and are likely to finish the development soon.

Path of Exile is a award-winning free-to-play action RPG developed and published by Grinding Gear Games. Path of Exile 2, a sequel to the game is also in development and a beta for the same is likely to release sometime in 2021.
