Blizzard veteran developers form ‘Frost Giant Studios’, aim to build the next great RTS game

Former Blizzard developers, Tim Campbell & Tim Morten have started their own game development studio and aim to build the next big RTS game.

The veteran developers Campbell and Morten have co-founded a new gaming company called ‘Frost Giant Studios’. The new company headed by Campbell and Morten has raised $4.7 million in seed funding from investors like Bitkraft Ventures, 1Up Ventures, GC Trader, Riot Games & Griffin Gaming Partners.

Both Campbell and Morten have worked on successful RTS titles that have a big player base and have made their way into esports. Tim Campbell was the lead designer for Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne and Tim Morten was the director for StarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void.

“In order to build another brand-new RTS, it felt like the opportunity to do it externally was too good to pass up. But I think all of us had a lot of love for Blizzard that made it a difficult decision to go this route,” Morten said in an interview with Gamesbeat.

Frost Giant also released a new video introducing the whole developers team which will be working on the company’s new RTS game.

Majority of the Frost Giant development team is made up of ex-Blizzard employees too. If you check out their website you will see they have featured 9 of their team members, all of which have worked on StarCraft 2 or World of WarCraft or have worked on something else in Blizzard.

The company’s core values are ‘RTS’, meaning “feedback from REAL players”, “respect TIME-tested mechanics of RTS”, “STRATEGICALLY expand the audience”, as stated on the official website.

In an interview with esports observer, Tim Morten, Co-Founder, Frost Giant Studios said, “Real-time strategy games have a great legacy in esports, and we definitely plan to carry that forward. We’re just in the early design stages, but we’re talking with some of the players, casters, and influencers who helped pioneer RTS esports, to help us lay the best plans for the future.”

At least one game is already said to be in development for the Frost Giant Studios.

By the looks of things many Blizzard employees are leaving the company to either join other studios or start their own. Also, not so long ago two more veteran Blizzard employees joined ex-Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime’s new company, Dreamhaven.
