No free next-gen upgrade for Gran Turismo 7 & God of War: Ragnarok

Sony is making changes to how next-gen upgrades work for their first-party games. In an update to the post about Horizon Forbidden West’s Collector’s and Digital Deluxe Edition, Jim Ryan, President & CEO, SIE talked about how the company is changing the next-gen upgrade model.

The update

Last year we made a commitment to deliver free upgrades for our cross-gen launch titles, which included Horizon Forbidden West. While the pandemic’s profound impact pushed Forbidden West out of the launch window we initially envisioned, we will stand by our offer: Players who purchase Horizon Forbidden West on PlayStation 4 will be able to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version for free,” said Jim Ryan, President & CEO, Sony Interactive Entertainment in the update. The reason for this update is to clear the confusion around the game’s next-gen upgrade as it was initially going to be a PS5 launch title but got delayed to February 2022. What it meant was that the game was out of what Sony considered the launch window for a next-gen free upgrade. Basically, Horizon Forbidden West PS4 copy will still be eligible for a free next-gen upgrade.

Ryan also explained that Sony’s first-party exclusive cross-gen titles(i.e. newly releasing on PS4 & PS5), both digital and physical, will offer a $10 USD digital upgrade option from PS4 to PS5. What this means is, going forward, all of Sony’s titles will be subject to an upgrade fee.

On the other hand, for the third-party titles, the decision will be taken by the respective publishers.
