The Outer Worlds future iterations could involve Microsoft as a publisher
It has recently been revealed that the future iterations for The Outer Worlds might not involve Private Division as a publisher. Instead the future iterations will likely be published by Microsoft.
Back in 2018, Microsoft acquired Obsidian Entertainment. In 2019 Obsidian Entertainment launched their action RPG game ‘The Outer Worlds’ alongside publisher Private Division, a company owned by Take-Two Interactive.
Commercially the game has performed pretty well, and was well-received by the RPG player-base. As revealed during the Take-Two Q4 2021 earnings call, the game has sold over 3 million copies since its launch back in October 2019 and it’s two DLCs have been “really very well received“.
“We will be participating in the franchise and whatever the future holds for that franchise. So we feel really good about it. And we think that it’s still building audience and this game itself has a lot of life left in it. And in the future — we’ll see what the future holds for it. But we do think it’s a long-term franchise and it is certainly something that we’re pleased with the results.“, said Karl Slatoff, President, Take-Two Interactive during its Q4 2021 earnings call. The above statement by Slatoff suggests that the partnership would continue for future iterations in the franchise.
But according to a recent statement made to GamaSutra, by a spokesperson from Private Division, the publishing label of Take-Two Interactive, the game’s future iterations will be published by Obsidian & Microsoft.
“Private Division is still supporting and marketing The Outer Worlds, including the upcoming release of Murder on Eridanos DLC on Nintendo Switch,” said the company. “Moving forward, Obsidian and Microsoft will be publishing future iterations in the franchise, and we’re absolutely thrilled to see where they take it.“, said the spokesperson from Private Division. Microsoft is yet to make any comments on this, but it still is highly likely that Microsoft will be the one to publish the next The Outer Worlds title.
Microsoft has been looking to expand it’s gaming portfolio for the past couple of years. The company also recently completed the ZeniMax Media acquisition this year after the purchase was approved by the EU. The company acquired multiple game development studios such as Bethesda Softworks, id Software, MachineGames, etc. in the deal.
