Free Fire – A good, but not great battle royale game

So I decided to play a game called Free Fire. It’s a battle-royale game similar to PUBG Mobile. The game is developed by 111dots Studio and published by Garena. As the name suggests, it’s a free to play game.

After launching the game, players can either sign in or play as a guest. I chose the guest option since signing in for the first time is a hassle. On launching the game, I was greeted with a crowded menu. UI/UX is just as important for a game as it is for an application or a website. Mobile game developers need to put more efforts into making a less crowded and simpler UI.

Cosmetics for the game include weapon skins, clothes, etc. with one exciting addition being pets, sort of like the ones in Fortnite, except much more interactive.  

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of gameplay, you should know that this review is done after playing the game on PC through an emulator(Bluestacks). Why? I wanted to test the game at its full potential, which wasn’t possible on my mobile phone due to hardware limitations.

Gameplay:

On launching the game for the first-time, players spawn on the spawn island. You’re then shown a short cinematic where the camera pans into view and transitions to the gameplay.

You jump out of the airplane on a surfboard, using which the character surfs on thin air while descending from the sky, which doesn’t really make sense. But it’s a video game, so I’ll give it a pass.

I chose to drop in the centre of the map, given that it almost always gets you into the action right away. I then grabbed some guns and went on my merry way.

The weapons in the game were as I had expected. The guns are fine, but there is a lack of throwables. I wish the game had more throwables. The auto-pickup system is excellent, but after a certain point where your storage starts getting full, you will have to do it manually or throw out items that you don’t need.

As expected, in the first few matches there were plenty of bots. This is probably to get new players adjusted to the game’s core gameplay. In my first game, I got 12 kills and won the game. 12 kills! That’s a fifth of the lobby “GONE“. So, you get the idea now, how the difficulty for new players is quite low as most of the lobby is bots in the first couple of matches.

In total, I played 7 games out of which I won 5. Even the real players were easy to play against, given that I was using a keyboard and mouse against someone who was probably playing on a phone.

Graphics & Performance:

Even with everything set to high, my rig was able to achieve steady 60 FPS. However, that’s on a PC while using an emulator so that shouldn’t be considered.

But I will say, the graphics aren’t really up to the mark in comparison to its counterparts. But as this allows the game to run on low end devices and also reduces the game’s APK size I can understand why the graphics are the way they are. Still, the game definitely lacks in the graphics department.

TL; DR:

Free Fire is definitely a good battle-royale game with a big community behind it. The game is fun to play but in comparison to its counterparts, the game doesn’t feel as fast paced, especially the combat.

If you have already played Free Fire, there are other battle-royale games like COD Mobile, which you should also try out. Also, if you are more interested in playing a FPS shooter, COD mobile is the way to go. You should also try out Among Us and Genshin Impact for a change.
