Embracer Group acquires 11 new game development studios

Embracer Group, the parent company of THQ Nordic yesterday revealed its financial results for first half of the fiscal year. It was also revealed that the company has made 13 acquisition this year.

The 13 acquisitions include 11 game development studios and 2 non-game development companies, a PR Agency and a QA Specialist company.

Here’s a list of the 11 game studios acquired by Embracer Group,

Acquired game development studios:

  • A Thinking Ape Entertainment: A Vancouver based company. Developer of Kingdoms at War: Hardcore PVP, a free to play mobile game with 1,000,000+ downloads.
  • Zen Studios: Hungarian video game developer. Has developed Pinball FX, Star Wars Pinball, Oprencia: The Stolen Sun, CastleStorm I & II and more.
  • Snapshot Games: A Bulgarian video game developed founded by Julian Gollop, the creator of X-COM franchise. It is mostly known for its turn-based strategy game Phoenix Point.
  • Nimble Giant Entertainment: Argentina based game development company. Nimble Giant has developed behind Bunch of Heroes, Master of Orion: Conquer the Stars and other games. It is also the developer and publsiher for Quantum League, a competitive online FPS shooter with 1v1 and 2v2 modes.
  • 34BigThings: Italian developer known for Hyperdrive Massacre, Super Inefficient Golf and the futuristic racing game, Redout.
  • Mad Head Games: A Serbian game developer. Mainly develops games in the HOPA(Hidden Object Puzzle Adventure) genre. Developed games like Moonsouls: Lost Sanctum, Wanderlust: City of Mists and more.
  • Purple Lamp Studios: Purple Lamp Studios is game development studio based in Austria. Developer behind SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated, based on Nickelodeon popular animated series SpongeBob SquarePants.
  • IUGO Mobile Entertainment:  Another Vancouver-based mobile game developer. The company has developed games like PvPets: Tank Battle Royale
  • Coffee Stain North: A Swedish game developer based in Stockholm. Embracer previously owned a large part of Coffee Stain North, and now has completely acquired the company.
  • Silent Games: A UK-based studio founded in 2018. It’s debut game is a co-op multiplayer will be coming out in 2023, where players will be exploring deep secrets of an ancient civilization.
  • Flying Wild Hog: Flying Hog Media is Polish game developer known for its Shadow Warrior Series.

Non-gaming acquisitions:

Embracer also acquired Sandbox Strategies, a New York-based PR & relations agency and Quantic Labs, a Romania-based QA Specialist.

Although these are of not so popular game studios, and the acquisition is nowhere near as big as the ZeniMax Media acquisition by Xbox, it still is a lot of companies. Embracer Group has certainly grabbed everyone’s attention with these many acquisitions.

More acquisitions?

“we have actively been engaging with more than 100 entrepreneurs who want to be part of the Embracer family, including a dozen sizable businesses that have the potential to create new operative groups under the parent company” said, Lars Wingefors, CEO, Embracer Group. What this means is, there are more acquisitions in the making.
