Fortnite PC size drops by more than 60 GB
Fortnite now takes less than 30 GB of storage space as the developers drastically reduced the size of the game files in a recent update.
Here’s the tweet before the update by ‘@FortniteStatus’, the official Twitter account for Fortnite’s updates and patch notes news. The tweet gives an idea of why the latest update is so big and how it will reduce the game’s file size
Please note the patch size will be larger than normal on PC (approx. 27 GB). This is to make optimizations on PC resulting in a massively reduced Fortnite file size (over 60 GB smaller), smaller downloads for future patches, and improved loading performance.

The game was approximately 90 GB before yesterday’s update and now after yesterday’s update has become less than 30 GB.
Many game developers nowadays are reducing their game’s file sizes, probably because players have complained about the games taking up more and more size with every update, and maybe also to get more players to play the game. Recently Infinity Ward pushed a new update for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare that lets you uninstall parts of the game that you are not using. This was after a YouTuber called BattleNonSense tweeted pointing out the game doesn’t fit on a single 250 GB SSD. Warframe also recently got reduced by approximately 6 GB.
It isn’t yet clear if Epic wishes to also reduce the size for other platforms, but at least for now it’s just for PC.
The update was approximately 27 GB, a lot bigger than any other normal updates, but justified as it was aimed at optimizing the whole game and reducing the game’s file size to approx 30% of the existing size.
The tweet also stated that the game will have improved loading performance and smaller download sizes for future patches as a result of the optimizations to the game’s files. Improved loading performance and smaller downloads mean that the game will not only update faster but also run better. Fortnite becoming smaller in size has freed up a lot of disk space and now allows players to install even more games on their PC.
